Planned burn in Magnetic Island National Park

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) conducts planned burns around the State to reduce the risk and intensity of bushfires and support a healthy environment.

QPWS will conduct a planned burn on Magnetic Island National Park in Horseshoe Bay from a

section of The Forts Walk, weather permitting. A suitable date for the burn has yet to be

determined but it will be undertaken on a day between Wednesday the 17th of July to Friday the 26th of July. More information will be provided once a suitable date has been determined.

As a result of the planned burn, smoke may be seen in the east of Horseshoe Bay, from Balding Bay, Radical Bay, Florence Bay, Arthur Bay and from The Forts.

There will be temporary closures to the following areas as part of the planned burn:

The Forts Walk will be closed for the duration of the planned burn

Access to the Forts from Florence Bay will be closed for the duration of the planned

burn

Dates and timings for the temporary closures of the above-mentioned tracks will be

provided as soon as the date of the planned burn has been determined.

The Forts Junction carpark will remain open for use during the planned burn. Radical Bay Road will also be open and Florence Bay, Arthur Bay and Radical Bay will be accessible.

There may be temporary congestion along Horseshoe Bay Road, please observe all signs,

barriers, and directions from QPWS rangers and other staff and never enter closed areas. Avoid driving through smoke where possible and be aware of firefighters working in the area.

These burns aim to mitigate the risk and intensity of bushfires and their potential impacts on

communities, infrastructure, parks, and forests.

They are also vital in promoting ecological health, biodiversity, and the conservation of species and habitats.

Planned burns are highly weather-dependent, generally requiring milder conditions and minimalwind.

These same weather conditions can also allow smoke to accumulate and linger until weather

conditions change and winds assist in dispersing the smoke.

If smoke affects you:

 Stay indoors and close windows and doors; and

 Keep respiratory medication close by.

Live air quality data, and information on smoke and dust health actions, can be found on the

Queensland Government’s website
