COUNCIL TO HOLD MEETING REGARDING POSSIBLE CAMP SITES ON THE ISLAND

Debbie Denison

The Magnetic Island Community News contacted TCC regarding possible camp sites on the island, last week.

Cr. Ann-Maree Greaney told the MCN a meeting will be held next week to discuss the matter.

Currently Magnetic Island does not have any council campsites on the island.

This is long overdue, with the island experiencing chronic rental housing shortage and the need for workers in the island's tourism and hospitality industry.

MIRRA requested that council install dump point sites for caravans and campervans last year.

It is very timely that council will hold a meeting to discuss the matter.

There are several TCC owned sites on the island which could become camping grounds.

There have been a number of incidents with campervans tyres being slashed around the island.

Recently a resident was stabbed by camper at West Point.

Also a number of incidents of heated exchanges between campers and residents.

It is time for council to step and provide campsites and facilities!

My understanding is that the problem is long term campers not campers per se. So why not let them stay longer at the camp site we have. Is that full?
