Townsville residents are being urged to ready their properties for the upcoming high-risk weather season, with Council holding its Get Ready Tip Weekend from 8-11 November.
Townsville Mayor, Troy Thompson said the Get Ready Tip weekend gave residents the opportunity to clean up their house and yard ahead of the high-risk weather season at no charge.
“Council’s Get Ready Tip Weekend comes at the perfect time for residents to get their properties ready for the start of the traditional wet season and any natural disasters which may impact the community,” Cr Thompson said.
“It’s a great opportunity to do a clean-up around the yard and have a bit of a think about what could become a projectile in the event of a cyclone, so I’d encourage everyone in our community to make the most of this four-day period to visit our transfer stations.
“But just remember if you are only planning to dispose of green waste and recyclables, you don’t need to wait till the 8th, you can take these to our waste facilities at no-charge all year around.”
Normal opening hours for Council’s five waste facilities will apply, with details available on Transfer Stations and Landfill.
“It’s also a good reminder to have a think about what can be recycled, repurposed or reused to try to limit our impact on the environment and what ends up in landfill,” Cr Thompson said.
“We want to thank the community for their patience if the facility they are attending is busy when they first arrive. Our crews will get you through as quickly as possible.”
Councillor Thompson said the Get Ready Tip Weekend was just one way Council was preparing the community for the season ahead.
“I want to remind the community of our free Get Ready Townsville event at Jezzine Barracks on Sunday 3 November from 9am-12pm,” he said.
“It is a great opportunity to get information from the experts on how to best plan, prepare and act, to keep your family and home safer in our tropical environment and during high-risk weather events. You can never be too prepared.”
Those residents unable to get to waste transfer stations can also access Council’s kerbside collection service. Bookings for this can be made by visiting Kerbside Hard Waste Collection or by calling 13 48 10.
