A Spectacular Celebration of Creativity and Sustainability on Magnetic Island
Mark your calendars for the inaugural JunkFest 2025, an exciting festival coming to Magnetic Island on Saturday 4th October 2025, at the Horseshoe Bay Community Centre.
Organized by the Magnetic Island Community Development Association (MICDA) and the Zero Waste Magnetic Island community group, and funded by the Townsville City Council, this event aims to become a key event in the North Queensland events calendar.
Turning Trash into Treasure!
JunkFest 2025 will showcase the transformation of discarded materials like metal, plastic, textiles, and cardboard into stunning art, fashion, and functional pieces. This celebration of sustainability in a festival environment will prove that waste can be reimagined into something extraordinary.
What to Expect:
• Junk Art Competition – Enter your upcycled sculptures, fashion, jewellery, or useful objects, with categories for all ages with great prizes to be won.• Junk Fashion Parade – Watch community members become fashion designers showcasing their creative, eco-friendly outfits.
• Live Music & Performances – Enjoy a lineup of talented musicians and cultural acts.• Eco Market Stalls – Browse sustainable and locally made crafts and enjoy yummy locally made food and drinks.• Interactive Workshops – Learn about recycling, composting, and waste reduction.• Sustainability in Action – The festival embraces zero waste, renewable energy, and eco- friendly initiatives.
This is a MICDA and Zero Waste Magnetic Island initiative, funded by the Townsville City Grants & Partnerships Program.
Inspired by the Katherine Junk Festival in the Northern Territory, JunkFest 2025 on Magnetic Island will blend art, culture, and environmental awareness, supporting local artists, community, and businesses, while promoting eco-friendly tourism. Be part of this inspiring movement and let’s make JunkFest 2025 an unforgettable event!
“We are thrilled to host JunkFest 2025 on Magnetic Island,” said Libby Evans Illidge, President of MICDA.
This event will be built on the success of previous MICDA festivals and art events such as the Magnetic Island Bay Dayz Festival 2009 - 2016 (50 events over a month each year), the Great Barrier Reef Film Festival 2016 - 2018, The Ripple Effect (stage production as part of the Bay Dayz Festival), and Tropical Talent circa 2008 and prior.
“This new event will provide an unparalleled experience for community members and visitors of all ages. We are eager to share this experience and host this event for everyone in the North Queensland region.” Sara Shaw, the former Bay Dayz Festival Co-Director, and The Ripple Effect, and Great Barrier Film Festivals Director.
We invite everyone to join us for JunkFest 2025 and be a part of something truly special!
Tickets/registrations will be available soon.
