TCC Magnetic Island Updates
Picnic Bay Reservoir Roof
This was always planned in for FY25 for a roof replacement. We were required to finish a bypass pipeline first to be able to redirect the water from the mainland to the nelly bay reservoir to supply the island water demand. This will be done while we take the Picnic Bay Reservoir offline for the structure and roof replacement. Picnic Bay roof was damaged during Cyclone Kirrily and in consultation with the Water Regulator and Queensland Public Health we took the Picnic Bay Reservoir offline and bypassed water through to Nelly Bay while the damaged section of roof was fixed.
The fix was always only temporary (12 months) as we were always planned to do the full replacement this FY and is anticipated to take up to 3 months to complete.
Alma Bay Bus Stop
Townsville City Council, in partnership with Translink and Kinetic, are investigating changing the alignment of route 250 and school route 251 on Magnetic Island in response to safety concerns:
After receiving feedback from the Magnetic Island community, Council identified safety issues related to long vehicles that travel on sections of route 250 and school route 251. The area of concern is between Yates Street and Hayles Avenue. Specifically, Council found the road environment in some parts of this area is not suitable for vehicles of this size.
As part of this project, Council will remove nine bus stops and construct five additional bus stops along Kelly Street and Marine Parade. During this time, temporary bus stops will be in place.
Council is in the early stages of developing concept designs and expects to complete this project in the current financial year, weather permitting. During this time, Council will continue working with Translink, Kinetic, and the Island community and share further information when it becomes available. This information will include temporary and new bus stop locations, associated infrastructure and construction activities, and project timeframes.
Picnic Bay Toilets
Council is anticipating inviting tenders for the construction of these toilets later this year.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by March 25.
Alma Bay Pedestrian Bridge and Drain
Budget has been allocated to undertake a drainage study for the catchment area of Alma and Geoffrey Bays. This study will be undertaken by an external third party organisation. The study is expected to be completed by March 25. The pedestrian bridge remains closed to the public. Budget has been allocated for the concept design of the decommissioning of the bridge and drainage improvements, which will be undertaken with community
involvement.
Magnetic Island SS Swimming Pool
Officers from Townsville City Council, Department of Tourism and Sport and the Department of Education are working through the final stages of being able to
provide a positive outcome in providing community access to the school pool. The project team are working through the key components of the project including the development of relevant agreements, risk management and pool operations
manuals required to ensure the safe community access to the pool. At this stage, a specific timeframe is not determined however it is a goal of all stakeholders to
achieve activation later this year.
