Council is preparing to undertake coastal management works along Nelly Bay foreshore, between the Nelly Bay playground on the corner of the Esplanade and Kelly Street, and the Nelly Bay Helipad, adjacent to Nelly Bay Road, Nelly Bay.
These works will protect coastal vegetation, reinforce vulnerable sections of the foreshore for improved coastal stability, and restore beach amenities and public access.
These efforts will also help reduce the impact of coastal erosion, support beach recovery, protect Council assets and residential properties near the Esplanade, and enhance the beach's resilience against future weather events.
As part of this project, Council will install hazard mesh and signs in and around specific areas of the foreshore to inform the public about restricted areas where machinery will operate.
The southern end of the foreshore, closest to Nomads Magnetic Island, will remain open during these works. Council plans to commence works on Monday, 7 April 2025, and expects to take two (2) weeks to complete, weather permitting.
The completion timeline will depend on machinery availability and tidal conditions.
