Picnic Bay Jetty will be basking in the glow of new lights after Townsville City Council finished creating a new after-dark tourist attraction there this month. Council workers installed new lights on the jetty as well as in the waters surrounding the jetty.
“Picnic Bay Jetty has been on Magnetic Island for more than 60 years, but these lighting upgrades have really changed the way this historic jetty looks,” Cr Greaney said. “Council has been lucky to have the support of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, which has previously installed LED lights on the pathway. It’s fantastic to be able to build on their upgrades with these new lights.
“The jetty is now surrounded by blue lights under the water, which look absolutely incredible. “The lights are pretty in themselves, but they also allow visitors to catch a glimpse of underwater wildlife like fish and turtles at night.”
Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Margie Ryder said similar lights had been used on jetties around the world. “These lights are really popular on jetties across the globe, but closest to home they’re set up on Orpheus Island,” Cr Ryder said.
“Marine animals are not disturbed by the underwater lights, which is incredibly important as Magnetic Island has such diverse sea life.”
Cr Greaney said, “I’m sure locals will enjoy this beautiful addition to the Picnic Bay Jetty as much as tourists will,” she said.
