Picnic Bay Reservoir Roof Replacement

Writer's picture: Magnetic Community NewsMagnetic Community News

Council is replacing the roof of the Picnic Bay Reservoir, which provides potable water for Picnic Bay and parts of Magnetic Island. To install the new roof, a crane will be used, and Ergon will temporarily disconnect nearby power lines for safety. The few affected properties will be notified in advance of any power outages or disruptions. Local contractor A. Gabrielli Constructions is undertaking the work on behalf of the Council.

Location: Yule Street, Picnic Bay – Magnetic Island

Timing: From Thursday 6 March 2025 for six (6) months

Works will include:

  • removal of existing reservoir roof

  • construction of new roof and associated framing, structure, and linings

  • installation of ventilators, access ladders, and an access platform

  • the disconnection of power lines, causing two power outages on separate days, two weeks apart, affecting only a small number of local properties.

    • the first single-day shutdown will be on Tuesday 11 March

    • the second single-day shutdown will be on Tuesday 25 March

    • Ergon will be notifying the properties that will be affected.

What does this mean for me?

If you live in or are travelling through the area, you may experience:

  • construction machinery and vehicle movement

  • noise and odour, especially during power outages, caused by diesel generators

  • increased levels of dust, noise, and vibrations

  • power loss for a small number of properties twice, two weeks apart

Funding

This project is funded by Townsville City Council.
