Townsville residents have a chance to share and record their stories that will be added to Townsville City Council’s Local History Collection and listened to by future generations.
Tropic Tales is calling for participants to share their stories across five story nights during the next seven months.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said the first event next week would focus on stories about facing the wrath of Cyclone Althea.
“December marks 50 years since Cyclone Althea roared through Townsville, and we want to hear stories from the people who weathered the storm,” Cr Greaney said.
“This first story night will be unique as the floor will be open for everyone to share their anecdotes, however the following four events will have selected storytellers who will have the chance to hone their skills with facilitator Kate Osborne ahead of the events.”
Cr Greaney said Tropic Tales was a special opportunity for Townsville locals to share their insights into aspects of Far Northern Life through the lens of work, love and living quarters.
“The theme of each story night will change, giving audiences an interesting mix of topics to listen to both for the live recordings and in the future when these recordings are accessed through the Local History Collection,” she said.
“You don’t have to be a seasoned public speaker to take part in these events, you just have to have a story to tell that fits with each theme.
“If you think you fit the bill, get in touch with Kate and see how you can contribute to this limited-series live-setting podcast.
“If you don’t want to tell your story but you want to listen, make sure you save the date for each of the recordings as there will be room for an audience at each one.”
The first recording focused on Cyclone Althea will be held at Aitkenvale Library on Thursday December 2 from 6.30pm.
